Kenya Nyeri Rumukia Thunguri AA

$19.50 lb.

Our Kenya coffee comes to us from Nyeri County in the Central Highlands of Kenya.  Their coffees are grown at altitudes of 1220 to 2300 meters as they are very near to the peak of Mount Kenya. This coffee is sourced from family owned farms organized around the Thunguri Factory.  The Rumukia Farmers Co-operative Society manages the Thunguri Factory, a wet mill, which processes coffee from members who generally cultivate around 250 coffee trees on half-acre plots.  Rumukia Farmers Co-operative Society is itself part of the larger Kenya Co-operative Coffee Exporters (KCCE), a vast farmer-owned network that ensures greater traceability and better profit margins for farmers than the traditional auction coffees. In Kenya the designation of AA is reserved for the highest quality coffee.

This coffee is grown in volcanic loam soil then fully washed and dried in raised beds.  In general, Kenya is a bright coffee that lights up the palate from front to back. It is not for people who do not like acidity in coffee (acidity being the prized bright notes in the cup due to an interrelated set of chlorogenic acids). A great Kenya is complex, and has interesting fruit flavors, particularly berry and tart apple.  This Kenya is a lively coffee with an aroma full of fruits including lemon and lime, mixed berries, orange and green apple.  The fruit nuances follow through to the cup and are accented with notes of burnt sugar, spices and dark chocolate with a rich heavy body.
