Our current stock of Tanzanian coffee is Peaberry. Normally the coffee plant produces a fruit that contains two seeds (or beans), but sometimes only one of the two seeds develops. The single, pea-shaped bean is known as a Peaberry. Typically around 5% of all coffee beans harvested are of this form.

Our Tanzanian RFA Edelweiss Estate is sourced from a family owned estate in Oldeani located in the Karatu district of the Arusha Region.  The Edelweiss Estate is 600 acres perched on the slopes of the Ngorogoro Caldera (the largest unbroken caldera in the world) which is protected wildlife refuge for the endangered black rhino and a UNESCO World Heritage site.  The estate has been in the Vohora family since the end of World War II and in recent years they have made significant farm renovations including intercropping macadamia trees for shade as well as income diversity.  They have also improved water management and quality control from picking to export with new innovations at their mill.  More than 50 full time employees sustain the estate and have access to housing and land to grow food crops for their families.

This coffee is grown in volcanic loam at 1,600 to 1,850 meters and is Rainforest Certified.  Coffee cherries are processed fully washed and then dried in raised beds.  The aroma is fresh with light floral and herbal notes.  In the cup this coffee is focused with lots of citrus flavors including lemon, lime and hints of orange and nuances of burnt sugar and chocolate.  The body is good with a smooth finish.
