Brazil Mogiana Guaxupe
Description
Brazil Mogiana Guaxupe FC SS comes to us from family farms organized around Cooperativa Regional de Cafeicultores em Guaxupé (Cooxupé) located in the Mogiana growing region. Cooxupé originated in 1932 with the founding of the Agricultural Credit Cooperative, in 1957 they transformed to a Coffee Growers Cooperative and became Cooxupé. Over the years they have become the largest co-op in Brazil with around 14,000 active members. About 97% of members are family or smallholder farms with some medium to large operations as well. They promote respect of the environment and sustainability and provide various services and assistance with production and pricing however their members need. They also belong to multiple coffee councils so that they may represent the needs of their members and help with creating the best policies for coffee growing.
Cooxupé farms are located in the Mogiana growing region. This area, along the border states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, is the most renowned of three major growing areas in Brazil. Rolling hills and uneven terrain lead to farms that are mostly small to medium in size, typically around 60 acres, with coffees growing at 800 to 1,200 meters. The soil in the area is a volcanic loam. Coffees are processed in the full natural style and dried in the sun or with mechanical driers. Coffee is stored carefully until time for milling and exporting which happens at Cooxupé’s dry mill. This way quality control and traceability can be carefully managed so that producers are paid according to the quality of their beans. Brazil holds its coffee crops to a strict grading system. This crop is rated Fine Cup (FC) and Strictly Soft (SS) putting it in the highest cup category. FC rated beans are specialty grade coffees grown at lower altitudes allowing the coffee cherries to mature quicker and produce a lighter cup. SS indicates a clean, balanced, sweet coffee free of roughness or strange flavors.
Nice sweet aroma. Smooth and creamy light body. Sweet in the cup with nuances of cocoa and caramel and very subtle hints of almonds and spice.
