Celebes Kalossi -Sulawesi- Rante Karua Estate

Our current crop of Celebes Kalossi∗ is sourced from the Rante Karua Estate located in the Bittuang district of Tana Toraja Regency, South Sulawesi∗, Indonesia. Located on the slope of Mount Rante Karua, the estate is owned and operated by the Sulotco Jaya Abadi group and is the largest privately owned plantation in Indonesia. They have a major processing facility in the Bolokan Valley at 1,500 meters above sea level. The road from the estate to the processing facility is very rough and rocky with the nearest major city, Rantepao, about 4 hours away along unpaved roads. To assist their farmers Sulotco Jaya Abadi maintains the roads for local travel. They have also implemented a revenue sharing system to help farmers get good prices for their crop and have an increasing sense of belonging to the plantation as well as an assurance for a better future. They have invested in school construction for the communities around the estate and also provide the tools needed for farmers to produce Certified Organic coffee.

Coffees from this estate are grown at altitudes of 1,400 to 1,700 meters in a volcanic loam soil. This coffee is fully washed and dried in the sun, beans are hand sorted to ensure the highest quality. This crop is Certified Organic. Rich aroma with nuances of dark chocolate and hints of spice. Syrupy, full body with notes of cocoa, spice, pipe tobacco and a hint of pear and earthiness.

∗The name Celebes was originally given to the country by Portuguese explorers. Sulawesi came in to common use following Indonesian Independence from the Dutch/Netherlands in 1945 and is now the proper country name. Kalossi is a specific village in the main growing region of Sulawesi.
