Costa Rica West Valley La Candelaria
Description
This crop of Costa Rica West Valley La Candelaria is sourced from La Candelaria estate, located near the Palmares canton, Alajuela province of Costa Rica. The West Valley is one of Costa Rica’s most well known growing regions. With the wide range of growing altitudes and microclimates, this area is about as perfect as you can get for coffee cultivation!
La Candelaria has been in operation since the 1960’s and has grown to 150 hectares (about 370 acres) of a mix of coffee producing trees and forest preserve. Hans Aeberhard has owned and operated La Candelaria since 1980. In addition to growing coffee, Hans has programs in place for maintaining native wildlife protection and reforestation. He also maintains Rain Forest Alliance Certification – to be certified, a farm must produce the product using methods that support social, economic, and environmental sustainability. La Candelaria also supports their local community through economic aid for the nearby school so that students have more learning supplies and better nutrition available.
This crop out of La Candelaria was grown between 1,200 and 1,400 meters above sea level in volcanic loam soil. All processing and milling is overseen by Hans as he uses multiple cultivars and processing techniques; meticulously starting from what cherries and when they are picked, to how it’s prepared so as to best represent the cultivars featured in specific lots. This lot is a blend of cultivars from across La Candelaria and was prepared in the washed method and scree dried. Rainforest Alliance Certified.
Delightful aroma with hints of chocolate, brown sugar, vanilla, and a touch of stone fruits. Nice sweetness in the cup with nuances of milk chocolate, brown sugar, and vanilla bean, along with apricot, black cherry, and almond. Smooth, medium body.
