Ethiopia FT Yirgacheffe Natural Worka
Our current Ethiopia Yirgacheffe is sourced from family owned farms organized around the Worka Cooperative. Located in the Gedeo Zone, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Regional State the Worka Cooperative was established in 2005 and in the same year joined a larger umbrella organization, the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU). With 305 members the Worka Cooperative is one of 26 cooperatives that make up more than 45,000 members of the YCFCU organization. YCFCU was established in 2002 with the mission to support a sustainable coffee supply from cooperatives in the Gedeo ethnic region. They work to “promote and support the continuous development of sustainable coffee supply by the members to the market in order to maximize financial returns to members’ cooperatives and in turn promoting the living standards of the member farmers”. In addition to sustainability YCFCU promotes consistency, traceability and transparency. Many of the members are able to gain organic and fair trade certifications but member farms that are not certified still follow traditional Ethiopian coffee cultivation practices. In the traditional practice farmers manage the coffee trees by hand and fertilize with organic matter and pests are controlled by natural methods. Although this crop is not certified organic it is Certified Fair Trade.
This crop of Yirgacheffe is from indigenous heirloom cultivars, grown at 1,750 to 2,400 meters in a vertisol (a clayey soil with little organic matter occurring in regions with distinct wet and dry seasons) type soil. This coffee is processed full natural and dried on raised beds. A sweet and fruity aroma with notes of berries and sugar. Nice, full body in the cup with nuances of sweet and slightly tangy mixed berries, hints of lemon and earthiness. Harmonious balance of sweet and bright. Certified Fair Trade.
