Ethiopia Hambela 1 Natural
Our Ethiopia Hambela 1 Natural Organic Benti Nenqa comes from the Hambela Estate located in the Guji Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia. The coffee is sourced from METAD Agricultural Development PLC. METAD is a family owned business in its third generation dating back to post World War II. Muluemebet Emiru, who became the first African female pilot in 1934, was awarded land in the Guji and Sidamo Zones from the Ethiopian Emperor. Today METAD is managed by Aman Adinew. After spending many years abroad Aman returned to Ethiopia with the desire to make a difference for his family and community.
METAD’s vision centers around a “bush to brew” model with a focus on exceptional quality standards. They ensure all coffees they produce or source from other farms are grown and harvested to their specific standards in order to present premium coffees to the rest of the world. METAD has bolstered the local community through employment, education and healthcare. Their workforce is over 70% women, they have created an elementary school that supports more than 400 students and they were the first in Ethiopia to partner with Grounds for Health, a cervical cancer screening program for women in coffee growing communities. METAD provides technical assistance and modern farming equipment to other local farms as well as training for domestic and international coffee professionals at their certified quality control lab (was the first and only SCAA certified on the African continent).
This crop is indigenous heirloom cultivars grown at 1,900 – 2,200 masl in a clay mineral type of soil. It’s a full natural coffee dried on raised beds and is also Certified Organic. The coffee has a fragrant aroma with nuances of berries, lemon and butterscotch. A deep, heavy body in the cup yet juicy and crisp. Notes of blueberry and cherry, sweet and winey grapes, lemon and dark chocolate.
