Hawaii Kona Makapueo
Our Hawaii Kona coffee is sourced from family owned farm, Makapueo, located in the famed Kona growing region on the island of Hawaii. Native-born Kaipo Sheen has owned and managed Makapueo since 2005. The farm was established by Kaipo’s grandmother and later passed down to his mother, Patricia Leola Young. When Kaipo took over the farm had just 5 acres. Through his efforts and partnership with over 40 other coffee estates Makapueo now manages and processes over 200 acres of coffee.
Kaipo has worked hard to renovate and grow the farm while preserving the Hawaiian traditions that his mother and grandmother established. To make quality and consistent 100% Kona coffee Makapueo has established uniformity for all farm aspects starting from the nursery up to the final export product. The farm is also meticulous in its conservation of water, energy efficiency and care for the soil. They have previously been ‘Farm of the Year” by the USDA for their quality control through the entire coffee process.
The coffee is grown at 365 to 670 meters. The soil is volcanic loam. After harvest the cherries are fully washed for processing and dried inside solar dryers that provide protection from rain. The coffee has a lovely, sweet aroma with notes of chocolate, marshmallow and a subtle floral hint. Smooth, creamy and sweet in the cup. Nuances of cocoa and milk chocolate and a subtle orange cream. Delightfully soft and sweet!
If you would like to try a quarter or half-pound of this coffee instead of a full pound please add a note in the “Order Notes” section on the checkout page or call the store at (256) 539-1636.
