Tanzania CPU Peaberry
Our Tanzania CPU Peaberry comes from producers in the communities within the Mbozi District, Songwe Region, Tanzania. Boasting the lowest and highest elevations in all of Africa (Lake Tanganyika 352 meters below sea level and Mount Kilimanjaro 5,895 meters above sea level!), Tanzania also stands with the rest of Africa in having some of the most renowned coffee profiles in the world.
This crop of peaberry (formed when just one seed matures in the coffee cherry rather than the typical two seeds) is sourced from a group of 235 producers on small family owned farms, usually consisting of just a few acres of land. Overseen by the Newmann Kaffee Gruppe (NKG) these small producers are able to continually raise the quality of their beans. NKG invests in infrastructure so that coffee crops can be processed consistently thus insuring better quality, which results in better prices on the international market and so more income for the producers. NKG’s centrally located CPUs (central processing unit) receive cherries from the farms which are then carefully sorted, depulped, fermented, washed and dried.
This crop was grown at elevations of 1,500 to 1,900 meters in a clay mineral soil. For processing this coffee is fully washed and dried on raised beds. Rich, sweet aroma with nuances of citrus, chocolate, and a hint of herbs. Solid and focused in the cup with a full, medium body. Notes of orange, lime and grapefruit, juniper, molasses, pastry and rich chocolate.
