Roasty Toasty August

The heat continues here in Huntsville, and even with all the rain we are definitely feeling as roasted as a fresh batch of Brazil. There aren’t many ways to beat the heat in The South, but you can bet your bottom bean whatever there is to try, one of us here has tried it! Our favorite is, of course, drinking copious amounts of iced coffee and tea and practicing the old standby of pretending it’s not nearly as hot as it is. One of these works, and one of these…not so much.

Coffee of the Month: Mexico Oaxaca Pluma Peñas Negras
Nice chocolately aroma with just a hint of sweet fruit and baking spices. Creamy, smooth body in the cup with nuances of milk and semi-sweet chocolates, vanilla, and soft raspberry. Nice and mellow!

Tea of the Month: Ti Kuan Yin
Golden-yellow liquor full of floral, sweet, and fruity flavors. Fragrant notes of orchid, apple, berry, and grapefruit balanced by subtle sweet notes of malt and honey.

Featured Brew Style: Cold Brew
The name may be a little misleading, but the taste is so phenomenal it makes up for it. Cold Brew is a style of steep brewing much like making iced tea, and the coffee it produces is smoother than almost anything else out there. Using the coarsest setting possible for grinding your beans, put those chunky grounds into a cold brew filter or cheesecloth, tie them up tight and set them in your liquid-containing apparatus of choice. Large pot? Sure. Jar? Great! Bathtub? Probably not, go with a clean bucket instead. Then you pour filtered water over top (we suggest a 1:8 ratio to start) and let that steep at room temperature for about 14 hours or so. Remove that satchet of now soggy grounds and ~ Voila! Smooth, soft cold brew ready for drinking.
