America’s Favorite Birthday Beans

If you haven’t been able to tell from all the signs, banners, ads, and general explosion of red/white/blue designs overtaking the South (and the entire country) this particular July is the United State’s 250th “birthday”. Happy birthday to us! We’ve squeaked into antiquity, as everyone knows a country isn’t reeeeaaally a country until it’s at least 250 years old. Like Hobbits aren’t adults until they’re 33, for example. Given that our “age of majority” starts at only 19… Tolkien probably had the right idea.

So let’s kick off this extra special July with some extra special offerings, goings-on, and all the things that try to make deep summer in Alabama palatable. “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity!” It’s both. Honestly, it’s both.

ANNOUNCEMENT!!

**HOLIDAY HOURS**
Friday 7/3 – 9:00am-4:00pm
Saturday – 7/4 CLOSED

Coffee Of The Month: Mexico Altura Veracruz

Vibrant aroma of mixed berries, jasmine, and milk chocolate. Full and creamy in the cup with notes of berries, cherries, sweet cream, stone fruit, caramel, and sweet tea. Natural Process

Tea Of The Month: Gold Kuan Yin

Exceptionally smooth and sweet, this oolong has notes of melon, citrus, and honey with a lightly floral and herbaceous finish. From a hybrid of the Ti Kuan Yin cultivar.

Did you know we currently carry 3 different sizes of Chemex pour-over carafes? Far be it from us to tell you how to make a stupendous iced coffee to beat this crazy heat but honestly these make it SO easy to have a smooth delicious iced coffee. So not so much telling you as imparting a trade secret. SHHHH.

Feeling Re’June’venated

This seemingly endless bout of rain has left us feeling washed clean of spring’s pollen (finally, good grief) and excited to share some updates for this summer!

Last month we celebrated 50 fantastic years of being in business, and to show we REALLY mean business we have new merch! Now found at kaffeeklatsch.com are 50th anniversary t-shirts, tote bags, and hats! Grab yourself some swag and strut your stuff downtown for all the coffee lovers to swoon over. While you make your mark on the town, stay caffeinated with a Fellow brand travel mug with our logo proudly stamped on the side! Honestly, we are super-mega-jazzed about these, and the rest of the new pieces! If we showed any more pride over our store you could see the rainbow glow of it from orbit.

Let’s get into the monthly favorites, shall we?

Coffee Of The Month: Guatemala Antigua Los Volcanes

Sweet aroma with notes of chocolate, caramel, and marzipan. Creamy medium body in the cup with nuances of dark chocolate, salted caramel, toasted nuts, along with soft cherry and baking spice notes.

Tea Of The Month: Super Yin Hao Jasmine

Top grade green tea with white, downy tips scented with Jasmine blossoms. Soft, full-bodied and sweet flavor with a slight, pleasing dryness in the finish.

Summer sun (one day…maybe? For more than an hour? Please??) means summer fun downtown! We like to list a few frivolities happening within a meandering distance of us, to lure …entice …give another reason to enjoy an outing after grabbing a cup of coffee. Keep an eye out for these at the end of our blog posts, starting next month and going until October!

May We Celebrate Another 50 Years!

Come one, come all, and ring around the Maypole with us as we gaily celebrate Kaffeeklatsch hitting its 50th year in business!

Our beloved cornerstone store of all things coffee has seen many faces, worn many hats, and roasted many a bean. It started out as a cafe, then added in coffee roasting, THEN added a bar at night! As time passes, things change, and the cafe has become a fresh hot cup of drip coffee. The bar has become a Bean Lounge for our huge, heavy bags of un-roasted coffee (reports of loud bass at night from that side are greatly exaggerated, we’re pretty certain. No comment on the loose glow sticks sometimes seen on Tuesday mornings).

But the heart of it all, the beans and the people, those remain. May they remain another 50 wonderful years, and may our beloved green stained glass dragon outlast us all.

(It probably will. Dragons live a LONG time, after all. Smaug’s fault was being prideful. And rude.)

Coffee Of The Month: Kaffeeklatsch House Blend

Medium-bodied, well balanced, pleasant flavor. The lively, complex flavors of Central and South American coffees make our this a real crowd-pleaser.

Tea Of The Month: Keemun Black 1st Grade

Our English Breakfast Tea. Full bodied and round with red wine, cherry, and toasted malt notes.

Special Announcements

To kick off our 50th anniversary, we are hosting a fantastic block party this coming Saturday, May 2nd! We’re modifying our hours to 11am-2pm, which is 2 hours shorter than normal because we are gonna be HIGH OCTANE with caffeine and joy! We’re talkin’ food, we’re talkin’ merch, we’re talkin’ music! All the things that make street parties a blast and a half. Weiner Von Braun and St Paddy’s Wagon are serving up delicious grub, and we’re gonna have 5 -count ’em FIVE- ceramicists gleefully hawking their hot beverage themed breakables. (Do your dancing away from their tables, if you could please)

We have restocked our shirts with a special 50th design, and will also have hats and tote bags commemorating as well. As a super special treat, we have a SUPER limited count of 50 shirts with a hand drawn “coffee drinker wearing a dragon suit” design as well, for $50 each. (I’m sensing a theme with these numbers…)

We sincerely hope as many regulars as possible can make it in and party hard with us, and just as many newcomers! It’s been a true joy and a privilege to roast, bag and serve up all things coffee and tea for our community.

Thank you.

Fool Me Once, Must Be April!

We hope everyone enjoyed yesterday’s April Fool’s post! Bonus points to anyone who can tell us what it actually said. Even MORE bonus points if you can pronounce it in Wingdings, in person.

April is bringing in gusty winds, warmer days, and the hope that the weather will even out. As it’s Alabama, the hope is very small. But as a teacup-shaped book once said, “All is made right with cookies and scones.” And what goes great with both of those? Coffee and tea! Here are this month’s special offerings to accompany whatever delicious treats you nibble on this month.

Coffee Of The Month: Colombia Supremo

Aroma notes of toasted pecan, cocoa, and soft stone fruit. Smooth, medium body. Well balanced in the cup with nuances of dark chocolate, salted caramel, apple, peach, and baking spices.

Tea Of The Month: Orchid Oolong

Delicate floral aroma. Notes of orchid, honeysuckle, honeydew melon, and hints of citrus are balanced by a mild herbiness.

This oolong smells FABULOUS! Did you know you can sniff any of the teas (and coffees) for free?! (Unless it’s crazy busy…in which case it’s still free but the teas WILL start looking very put-upon.)

In the spirit of yesterday’s Fool Post, let’s meet the team that keeps Kaffeeklatsch running and roasting and find out their current favorites!

-At the helm of this coffee ship is Captain Katie, frequently found roasting a new batch or teaching everyone the subtle art of tea steeping. “I’m really enjoying a custom blend of ½ Bali and ½ Honduras, set to drip. For a quicker brew I found I really like using the inverted aeropress method with our French Roast. For tea? The ‘Fragrant Fruit Mountain Oolong’ has my full attention.”

(I’m really liking this ship metaphor, let’s keep it going shall we?)

-In charge of all things repair and Moccamaster is Amanda! We only got a few drive-by snippets as keeping the 1929 roaster running smoothly takes a keen eye. “Sumatra! Or any of our Indonesians. Love to set my Moccamaster to auto-drip for those!”

-Longtime crewmate and newer to the roasting side is Paron. Never has the same hairstyle twice, with what we suspect is a detachable mustache, Paron says, “Oh it’s gotta be Honduras in a French Press, totally. Tea? Oh there are so many! Which section do you want to start in?” We soon got lost in a haze of tea and forgot to take notes. Moving on!

-Anna Ruth, definitely not a time-traveling owner of a haunted Victorian B&B, didn’t let us down. “Well I have to agree with the captain, French Roast in the aeropress is really great. I do like a decaf sometimes, and the decaf Ethiopia is fantastic as a pour-over. My current favorite tea is the Winter Punch!”

-From the start, amazingly artistic Creation has wowed us with some insightful and intricate knowledge on ratios. The current methods? “I use a 1:15 or 1:17 ratio method for a pour-over using our Timor-Leste. Starting with 15g of coffee, and ending with 250g total. I love a finer grind and a temperature of 188 degrees. The Timor is always romantic. This month’s Orchid Oolong is delicious.” So scientific! We love it.

-The two newest mates to the ship, Ruby and Cole, have already delved deep into the waters of coffee tasting and come up with some favorites. Ruby, “Red Sea Blend, as a pour-over! Oh and for sure the Lapsang Souchong. It tastes like the Costco Tire Center! Or a campfire.”

(We must assume that the Tire Center holds fond memories for Ruby)

Cole, “Right now it’s gotta be the Brazil in a French Press, and the Da Hong Pao Oolong.”

Thank you to both of you! We hope you continue to love it here. If not, please be aware we ran out of lifeboats sometime in the 80’s.

March yourself down the street…for some coffee!

You best march down for some coffee! Right now! We mean it! (Marching is great but exhausting, pace yourself)

Whew! Somehow we’ve all made it to March, the month of reasonably warm days and crispy cool evenings. A little mercurial, a little flippity-floppity, but easily made perfect by a freshly roasted cup of coffee or a perfectly steeped tea. Thank goodness that’s the majority of what we sell! Without further ado – and leaving aside dire ides warnings for a moment- let’s get into our special monthly offerings.

Coffee of the Month: Red Sea Blend

A curated mix of Ethiopian coffees – We recommend this for fans of Ethiopia Harrar and Yemen

Vibrant aroma with notes of mixed berries, fig, and milk chocolate. Medium body in the cup with notes of rich chocolate, cherry cordial, raspberry jam, and brown sugar. Natural/Dry Process.

**A note about this blend: Normally we blend this to order, but this particular mix comes to us pre-blended from the source and we roast it as one.

Tea of the Month: Honeydew Mint

A refreshing blend of fruits, blossoms, and herbs including melon and peppermint.

What did you say about warnings about ides? Oh, that! Just a little historical fun about Caesar, “ides of March” and all that. Blame Shakespeare! Nothing to worry about, unless you’re a salad.

We are so excited to be  celebrating our 50th year here in 2026! So excited, in fact, we may be doing a lil’ something-something in May…keep your eyes open and your favorite mug at the ready! (Did you know you can get belt holsters for mugs?? The internet is amazing)
